Meaning of Reverse Osmosis (RO) system:

The word Osmosis is defined as a process of moving water or molecules through a semi-permeable thin membrane from a low-concentrated to the high-concentrated solution. A common example of osmosis that we can find in daily life is skin soaking up water, slugs reacting to salts and roots of the plant absorbing water from the soil.

Similarly, Reverse osmosis is defined as the passing of molecules through a thin semi-permeable membrane from high-concentrated to the less concentrated solution. Therefore, reverse osmosis is simply the opposite of the osmosis process.

In reverse osmosis, the semi-permeable membrane acts as filters that let only water molecules to pass and collects containments. In water, filters Reverse osmosis processes taken place when contaminated water passes through filtration membranes and can provide less contaminated drinking water.

Working of reverse osmosis (RO) in water filters:

Reverse Osmosis is a widely used technology in water filters to purify the drinking water. The technology uses pressure to pass the contaminated water through a thin membrane for separating impurities present in it.

The working of Reverse osmosis purifier is opposite to that of the principle of osmosis, which we have discussed in the first part of the article. In reverse osmosis, high-pressure pumps are used to increase the pressure of the side of the salt of RO and force the water through the semi-preamble membrane to remove impurities.

The semi-preamble membrane of the filtration is a synthetic plastic material that allows only water molecules to pass through. The membrane stops the impurities present in the water to pass through it. And the impurities so collected by the membrane are either thrown out through drains or onto another process of purification. The water or molecules of water that passes through the RO membrane of the filter is called permeate water. Permeate water, on average, has around 95 to 99 percent of impurities removed from it.

The sophisticated RO membrane is equipped to remove a high percentage of impurities present in the water. Also, the RO membrane of the water filters uses the cross-filtration system. The cross-filtration system uses two outlets – one is used for filtered water and others for contamination. The main reason for adopting the RO cross-filtration system is to avoid the buildup of contamination, and cross-flow filtration allows water to clear away contamination accumulated and to provide adequate turbulence to maintain the surface of the membrane.
